ELIZABETH - A teenage girl is dead after a massive 5-alarm fire tore through a house on William Street in Elizabeth last night.
The 17-year-old girl, Basant Abdelaziz, was found on the top floor of the house in a closet. More than 100 firefighters from numerous fire departments battled the fire last night and police say several surrounding homes were evacuated.
Investigators say Abdelaziz called her boyfriend, but he could not make it to the house in time.
Fire officials said the flames burned a hole through the center of the building, causing the third floor to cave through to the basement. Firefighters were then prevented from attempting a rescue and the girl remained trapped.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Elizabeth's fire chief says the fire gutted the house, which will be destroyed.
