SOUTH RIVER - One person was killed and 20 are displaced after a massive fire ripped through a two-story building in South River Christmas morning.
The fire started at 11 Main St. at around 1 a.m. The building features a rooming house and nail salon, as well as a vacant car dealership on the first floor. Fire crews from South River and neighboring communities battled the smoke and flames throughout the night.
Residents of the rooming house say that there were about 20 people staying in the building at the time of the fire, and that most of them escaped.
One woman was killed in the fire. Mayor John Krenzel says the victim, who was disabled, has no family and few friends.
Those who got out are staying at local hotels or with family members, and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The Middlesex County prosecutor is investigating what caused the fire and the fatality.
