READINGTON - Flames ripped through a home in Readington Saturday morning, leaving one person dead.

The fire happened on Higginsville Road just after 6 a.m.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered the house was fully engulfed in smoke and flames.

"They attempted the rescue, but were turned back by extreme heat and fire. They believed that somebody was trapped," says John Kuczynski, of the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office. "That search resumed as soon as the fire was knocked down."

The victim was not identified, but officials say it was an elderly woman.

A firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
