It was originally reported that there was a fourth person shot, however Newark Police Director Eugene Venable has since updated the situation.
George Washington Carver Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the incident because the school is close to the scene. Students and staff were forced to stay inside closets for nearly 15 minutes. The lockdown was lifted just before 3:30 p.m.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police Department are investigating. It is believed that this shooting is in retaliation to another shooting from last year.
No arrests have been made.
