NEWARK - A man was killed and 14 people were injured today after a New Jersey Transit bus was hit head-on by a van in Newark.

NJ Transit says 17 people were on the 40 Line bus and two people were in the van when the crash occurred on Port Street. The crash happened at about 5:15 p.m.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Bus passengers were being treated for minor to moderate injuries. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The driver of the van was a 54-year-old man from Queens, who was pronounced dead at University Hospital, according to a Port Authority police spokesperson. Officials believe a medical emergency may have triggered the head-on crash.
