1 dead, 1 wounded in Newark shooting

NEWARK - Newark police say one man is dead and another is wounded after a shooting at Thorne Street and Evergreen Avenue in the city's South Ward.

The shooting is the Brick City's fourth in less than a week. Newark police say they arrived on the scene and found one male suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the face. He was transported to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), but died moments after arriving at the hospital.

Officers say there was a second victim who had been driven to Beth Israel Hospital after suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say he is getting treatment and is expected to recover.

Detectives from the city's Major Crimes Unit, along with investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, are looking into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
