1 dead, 1 injured in shooting near Vailsburg Park in Newark; police search for gunman

One man is dead and another is injured after a shooting in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. (3/18/14)

NEWARK - The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is searching for the man who shot two men, killing one in broad daylight Tuesday.

Authorities say the shooting happened near Vailsburg Park at the intersection of Isabella Avenue and Plymouth Street at around 12:30 p.m.

Witnesses say a group of men and a young child were standing at the corner when a man walked around the corner and opened fire.

About 10 to 15 shots were fired, according to a witness. The two men were hit, but the child was not injured.

Another shooting incident was reported a short while later at Avon Avenue and South 14th Street. Witnesses there say a man was shot, but were not sure if he shot himself or was shot by someone else.

Police have not said whether the two shootings were related.

No arrests have been made.
