CLIFTON - One man was killed and another was injured after an apparent random knife attack in Clifton Monday morning.

The incident occurred at the Richfield Shopping Center on Clifton Avenue.

Henry Werner, 61, has been taken into custody in connection to the attack. A person familiar with the suspect described him as a homeless man and said he was never known to be violent.

Police say Werner attacked an acquaintance outside of a Dunkin' Donuts after a brief exchange.

Debbie Roon, an eyewitness who works in the area, said that Werner fatally stabbed the man in the back. She says an older man then jumped in to help and was sliced across his back.

Officer David Struss, who was in the area, brought Werner to the ground and handcuffed him. He is being charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

Authorities say 67-year-old Paul Baker, of Clifton, died from his injuries. Clarence Wispelwey, 80, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
