TRENTON - An early morning fire in Trenton claimed the life of one young child, while firefighters saved three others.
The fire broke out around midnight at 97 Vine St. near Brunswick Avenue.
Officials say four children were inside the row home with a woman when the fire started.
"The firefighters made a valiant attempt to make an entry, but however due to the intense fire, they were driven back," said Trenton Fire Director Leonard Carmichael Jr.
Firefighters say a 7-year-old boy was found dead on the second story of the home.
Trenton Battalion Chief John Gribbin tells News 12 New Jersey he spotted one of the children treading water in the basement of the home. Firefighters were able to safely rescue the 18-month-old.
The woman, who is the mother of the boy that lost his life to the fire, jumped from a second-story window. She is currently in the hospital with an injured leg and pelvis.
Officials have not released any information regarding the cause of the blaze.
A vigil will be held tonight for the victims of the fire. The vigil will be held at the soccer fields near Father Rocco Park, just a few blocks from Vine Street.
