Newark voters prepare for upcoming mayoral showdown
(03/17/06) NEWARK ? Many residents believe the upcoming mayoral race in Newark will look more like a street fight than a political campaign.
Two candidates, incumbent Sharpe James and Cory Booker, have been getting most of the headlines and the attention. However, there are five other candidates on the ballot for voters to choose from. Among those candidates, Socialist Workers Party candidate Nancy Rosenstock and Democrat David Blount say they plan on running a very grassroots campaign.
Another person on the ballot, Ron Rice, has stated he wouldn?t run if James sought a sixth term. James made that announcement just before the filing deadline Thursday. The 70-year-old James and 36-year-old Booker squared off once before in 2002. This year?s election will be held May 9.
