New Jersey sees unprecedented number of mail-in ballot requests
Election offices around New Jersey are making sure polling places are ready for Election Day on Nov. 8.
These offices are also making sure that mail-in ballots go out on time. Officials say an unprecedented number of mail-in ballots were requested this year.
"This time of year is very challenging," says Middlesex County Board of Elections Administrator Jim Vokral.
Vokral says that more than 43,000 mail-in ballots were requested for the county this year. This is almost double the last presidential election.
"Many people are active, and they are traveling or working, and they can't get out to vote on Election Day," Vokral says.
Some say one of the reason for the increase in ballot requests is the heated race between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
More than 19,000 mail-in ballots have been received so far in Middlesex County. They will be counted on Election Day.
The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Nov. 1.
