Arabic speakers who live in New Jersey can now obtain voter registration forms in their native language.
The change was first initiated by the Palestinian American Community Center in Clifton. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, over 67,000 New Jersey residents live in households where Arabic is spoken.
"Now there are no more obstacles, no more impediments. We are going to make this accessible to people who speak Arabic and who primarily read Arabic,” says Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh. “We're proud to say that we are expanding the voter registration process."
New Jersey offers voter registration forms in 11 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese and Punjabi.
