New Jersey honors 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor attacks
Ten servicemen from New Jersey on board the USS Arizona lost their lives in the Pearl Harbor attack 75 years ago Wednesday.
About 2,400 Americans were killed in total, with just over 1,000 Americans surviving.
Some of the survivors are in Hawaii this week paying tribute and remembering that fateful day. Three were honored Tuesday.
"We fought the fire for two days and had to let it cool down for six, I forget seven days, and then we dove on the ship for eight to nine days under where the officer's quarters are and turret number three and four to bring bodies out," says Lou Conter, a Pearl Harbor attack survivor.
The official ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon in Jersey City.
Battleship New Jersey in Camden also held a Pearl Harbor memorial ceremony that was free and open to the public.
The ceremony also celebrated the anniversary of the launch of the USS New Jersey back in 1942. The ship was commissioned for service in World War II and now serves as a museum.
