The Joe Judge era of the New York Giants has officially begun and the new head coach says that he is only looking forward.
At a news conference Thursday, Judge said that the only culture in the Giants for the future will be a winning culture.
“And what that means is everybody comes to work every day, regardless of how they feel, and puts the team first, period,” said Judge. “We're going to ask our players at times to do things that necessarily may not be what they have in mind for themselves. But if it's best for the team, they have to be willing to go forward with it, because that's what a winning culture is.”
Judge has the full sport of Giants co-owner John Mara. Mara says that it was the best head coaching interview he’s ever been a part of.
“What came through in the interview was his poise, his confidence, his leadership, his knowledge of the game,” Mara says. “What it takes to build a winning program, his ability to relate to players, and then, of course, his work ethic.”
Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman says that he agrees with Mara and says that he will work in collaboration with Judge.
“It's about building consensus, and it's about getting to the right place. I've done this long enough with Ron and then Pat and whatever, we're going to get to the right place,” Gettleman says.
For Judge, that means getting the Giants back to an old-school physical mentality.
“We will play fast. We will play downhill. We will play aggressive. We will punch you in the nose for 60 minutes, we will play every play like it has a history and a life of its own, with a relentless, competitive attitude,” he says.
Judge says that the next steps are to evaluate everyone on the roster and the coaching staff so that he can get an insider’s perspective of the team.
