New Brunswick’s George Street Playhouse set for demolition
A new musical being performed in New Brunswick is bringing down the house -- literally. It's the last show at the current location of George Street Playhouse.
The musical comedy "Curvy Widow" is about a woman exploring online dating as she enters a new phase of life, but it's George Street Playhouse itself that's in transition.
The New Brunswick landmark is about to be torn down after 33 years in its location and hundreds of shows.
“For years, we've been putting Band-Aids on the place and trying to make do,” George Street Playhouse Artistic Director David Saint said.
Formerly a YMCA, the 100-year-old building was never completely equipped as a theatre. George Street Playhouse, as well as Crossroads Theatre next door, will be demolished this summer, making way for an arts center with two modern theatres beneath a hi-rise of offices and apartments.
“Lots of transfers have happened, you know, to off Broadway and Broadway from this theatre. It's a big deal, and it'll be bigger in the future,” said "Curvy Widow" actress Nancy Opel.
For the next two years, George Street Playhouse will put on shows inside the former state Agriculture Museum on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus.
In addition to George Street and Crossroads theatres, the new arts center, which is scheduled to be completed in two years, will be shared by American Ballet Theatre and music programs at Rutgers.
