Cedar Grove High School students took part in a Sept. 11 memorial for the fifth year.
Memorial organizer David Schoner says that the purpose of the memorial is to help educate the students about the significance of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks – an event that happened before any of them were born.
“We know it's working because it causes a conversation with the kids. We discuss it with the kids... we see them bringing it up and that's what it really is about,” Schoner says.
The students placed 2,977 flags on the front lawn of the high school, alongside the names of the victims killed in the attack in 2001 and those killed in the previous World Trade Center attack in 1993.
The display is named “Cedar Grove Waves.” The project is in its fifth year.
Every student at the high school will place at least one of the 30-inch flags on the lawn. Gym classes this week will spend half a period placing the flags and the other half in a seminar learning about events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Seniors Lauren Cap and Gianna Kubu participated in the display for their fourth and final time.
“It's a very powerful thing we are doing and it’s important to show us that we can never forget,” Cap says.
“Every time we put down a flag…it gives us more of a sense of what everyone felt on that day,” says Kubu.
"There will be a ceremony on Wednesday to commemorate the event and then the flags will stay on the lawn until Sept. 23.
A permanent memorial with a piece of steel from the World Trade Center was built at the school last year.
