There has been much public outcry over who is to blame for the country’s latest mass shooting.
The country is in mourning after a 19-year-old gunman allegedly killed 17 people at a southern Florida high school Wednesday afternoon.
The FBI is taking a lot of heat after it was discovered that the agency was recently warned about suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz being a potential threat. The FBI reportedly received several tips from concerned citizens about Cruz, but did not follow up.
"Under normal protocol this information should've been provided to the Miami field office,” FBI Special Agent Robert Lasky said in a statement.
People across the world are expressing their opinion on how they believe the tragedy could have been prevented.
Many News 12 New Jersey viewers weighed in on social media on what they believe should be done to prevent mass shootings from happening.
Several comments questioned what medications the suspected shooter was taking. "Isn't there an outcry now to investigate the connection between all these school killers and prescribed drugs?” the post said.
Another commenter said, “We need God back in the school system and this nation.”
Many other New Jersey residents were calling for more guns in schools.
"Serious question-why doesn't anyone walk into a police station and start shooting? Give up? Because everyone knows there's people with guns inside who will meet force with force,” said one commenter.
New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is looking at his Republican counterparts who continue to side with the NRA.
"They need to feel the heat at home that this is not acceptable,” Menendez said.
Many students and teachers in Parkland, Florida, where the shooting occurred, agreed with Menendez’s sentiments.
"We are not to be bought by the NRA. They're not supposed to be listening to the NRA about our protection,” a student said.
“Assault rifles should not be allowed to be purchased,” a teacher said. Cruz allegedly used an AR-15 in the shooting.
President Donald Trump was in Florida Friday meeting with first responders and victims of the shooting who are still hospitalized.
