Movie theaters are allowed to reopen in New Jersey on Friday, but many theater operators say that they may not be able to reopen as soon as expected.
“Our challenge now is timing,” says Cranford Theater owner Doreen Sayegh.
Sayegh says that the decision for theaters to reopen on Sept. 4 is a welcome one, but she says that there is not enough time to hire staff and train them in COVID-19 compliance.
“One of our other challenge is that there is not enough content in the pipeline right now. There are about two or three newer movies,” Sayegh says.
Film studios have held back movie releases until more theaters reopen nationwide. The much-anticipated Christopher Nolan film “Tenet” will open this week, but not many other movies.
The Cranford Theater will continue to operate a drive-in, showing classic movies.
When movie theaters do reopen on Friday, they will only be allowed 25% capacity and audience members must socially distance. Masks will also be required for staff and guests.
Many of the major movie chains have not yet announced reopening plans in New Jersey.
