Mother gets 45 years in prison for daughter's starvation death
An Irvington mother is heading to prison for the starvation death of her 8-year-old daughter and the beatings of the girl's two young siblings.
A judge on Wednesday sentenced 34-year-old Krisla Rezierkyson Kris, also known as Venette Ovilde, to 45 years behind bars. Rezierkyson Kris was convicted in March of aggravated manslaughter, as well as child endangerment for beating and denying food to her two other children, a 6-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl who survived.
She was acquitted of murder.
She was charged after her daughter, Christiana Glenn, died of starvation and an untreated broken femur in 2011.
Her attorneys argued that she was a single mother with a diminished mental capacity who had fallen under the influence of a preacher who advised her on how to treat her children.
Charges are still pending against Myriam Janvier, 29, who also lived in the apartment. She is expected to be tried separately. No date has been set yet for her trial, according to officials.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
