The Morris Park community is upset after the Department of Transportation announced plans to make changes to roadway in the neighborhood.
The DOT is trying to reduce the main stretch on Morris Avenue to just one lane. It says this change will make the street safer.
Residents believe this change will only make traffic worse. Those who live near Morris Park Avenue say the road is full of cars most times of the day.
They have been fighting the proposed changes by DOT for some time, only to lose their lawsuit and have DOT move forward with the construction. The construction is expected to begin on Monday.
The changes done by DOT are creating a median with left turn bays, reducing travel to one lane in each direction and adding bike lanes to both sides of the road.
DOT says it will improve safety for everyone while also calming traffic. They backed up the proposal with safety data.
The data shows that 367 people were injured in a five years on the stretch road. Those committed to Morris Park say all the changes will so is kill business in the neighborhood and eventually hurt the community.
DOT responded to their victory saying, "DOT thanks Judge Suarez for his thoughtful decision that allows our critical safety project along Morris Park Avenue to move forward. As we have seen dozens of times under Vision Zero, simple 'road diets' like this save lives. We expect to begin this roadway work next week — and as with all our projects, we expect to be on the ground monitoring changes closely, working with local stakeholders."
However, those in the community are not giving up. They say they will continue to fight by putting a stop order in place.
