Hundreds of dead peanut bunker bait fish have washed up near the Keyport Marine Basin.
The situation occurred one day after crews several miles away in Keansburg finished cleaning up 1 million dead fish that washed up in that town.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the situation in Keyport. When it happened in Keansburg, DEP officials said the recent hot weather caused the oxygen levels to decrease in the water, suffocating the fish.
DEP officials tell News 12 New Jersey that they believe that these fish are part of the same group of fish that washed up in Keansburg earlier this week.
There is no word on when cleanup may begin.
