Community mourns 2-year-old struck by dump truck in Stanhope
Members of the northern New Jersey community have come together to mourn with and support the family of a 2-year-old boy struck and killed by a dump truck Monday morning.
The boy was killed in front of his home on Route 206 near Acorn Street. He was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
A memorial has been set up outside the home. Neighbors and members of the community have been coming by to leave items in remembrance of the boy.
"I left a sweatshirt and a stuffed animal to keep him warm. We work for a motorcycle shop and want support the family and the community and it's getting cold out and we're thinking about him,” said one neighbor.
Other mourners say that the whole situation is a tragedy.
“We have kids at home. They play, they run around - they run around the driveway sometimes and just knowing that there are houses here and even if the driver wasn't in the wrong, it's a lot of responsibility. It’s 45 mph here, I mean you're driving a big truck, there's only so much you can do,” another passerby said.
Police have not released many details about what happened during the incident, but the truck driver was not detained and no charges have currently been filed.
Police say that two motorists who witnessed the accident tried to perform CPR on the boy before first responders arrived.
