A new program is underway to help COVID-19 patients with lingering health issues work toward a full recovery at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus.
The COVID-19 Survivors Rehabilitation and Recovery Program offers outpatient services and coordinated rehab, including physical and speech therapy.
Dr. Charles Markowitz, medical director of rehabilitation at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, says he believes this type of program will be a big part of future treatment for post-COVID patients.
"The goal is to reach a point where you're independent with all of your function," says Dr. Markowitz. Can we get you to jog five miles again? I think some people, yes, but we'll do the best we can to get you back to a point where you can lead a happy life."
Dr. Markowitz says a lot of the program's work is focused on respiratory issues.
"We have special pulmonary rehab as part of the program where the patients are monitored, their heart, their oxygenation, they're being seen by respiratory therapy and overseen by a pulmonologist," says Markowitz.
Patients at the center can use treadmills, do weightlifting and work on balance training.
Lead respiratory therapist Lisa Hillenmayer says they are using treadmills to help patients build stamina. They are even using hand bikes to help build the strength to use their lungs.
Patients interested in gaining access to the program are advised to speak to their primary care physician.
