A meteorologist with Climate Central says that the United States has seen a lot of rain over the past 12 months – breaking an old record.

“This is the wettest 12-month period on record in the United States,” Sean Sublette says. “We beat the old record by about a quarter of an inch…five of the six of these kinds of records, those top 12 months, have all come in the 21st Century.”

In New Jersey, Newark has seen an increase in days per year with heavy rainfall amounts. The northeastern part of the country has seen downpours increase over the last 50 years.

But is there a benefit to all this rain?

“The benefits for us in New Jersey is that we don’t have a lot of water issues to deal with. We don’t have to worry about drought as much,” Sublette says. “We’ll have more flooding issues to contend with, especially streams and creeks, but droughts won’t be as much of a concern."

The clouds and wet weather have also help temperatures stay cooler lately.

New Jersey is expected to see a chance of rain for several of the next upcoming days.
