Memorial planned at site of Newark school shooting
The scene of a tragic schoolyard shooting in Newark over the summer will be turned into a memorial park.
Three college students were killed and another injured after being shot at Mount Vernon School in August. School administrators are handing the property over to the Trust for Public Land in order to develop the site.
Family members of the deceased say the memorial is a bittersweet reminder of what happened.
"It brought chills to our bodies to even step forward and come to a place like this," said James Harvey, whose son Dashon was killed in the shooting.
The Trust for Public Land will help build the park. Officials expect the memorial to cost $1 million, a third of which has already been raised.
