Meals on Wheels helps seniors beat the heat
Senior citizens who can?t easily leave their homes are grateful to have a program that will deliver fresh, hot food to them regardless of the weather outside.
The heat and humidity affect everyone, but sometimes seniors feel it more ? especially those living without air conditioning. The Greater New Brunswick Meals on Wheels program delivers fresh, hot meals to people who can?t always make it out of the house to purchase food.
Maria Cherny can?t leave her home because she?s too sick. Meals on Wheels makes sure that Cherny, and people like her, receive meals twice a day, five times a week.
The meals are delivered to clients? houses by volunteers. Clients can request cold meals or hot meals. James Horvath, the president of Meals on Wheels, pitches in and delivers food himself. ?[We?re] providing something really basic,? Horvath says. ?Food that they need.?
?Most of [the seniors] would have been in the hospital, but some have stayed long in the hospital so to reduce the cost they go back home,? volunteer Chib Obsi says, stressing the importance of good food being delivered to seniors.
Horvath explains that the volunteers form relationships with the clients. ?Sometimes ? our volunteers are the only ones these people see,? he says.
Clients say they?re grateful for Meals on Wheels. ?The meals they bring are nice,? one woman says. ?And I enjoy them.?
The Greater new Brunswick Meals on Wheels program is currently looking for volunteers and donations.
