McGreevey says he can't afford alimony
Former Gov. Jim McGreevey said in the first day of testimony at his divorce trial Wednesday that he cannot afford to pay his ex-wife alimony.
The day in court was spent dissecting McGreevey?s income and assets. McGreevey and his attorney maintain he has no assets to divide from his ?short marriage? to Dina Matos McGreevey.
While McGreevey was on the stand, his attorney asked him to go over tax returns filed since the couple was married in 2000. McGreevey testified that his income has dropped to less than $50,000.
He also maintained that he has had to borrow money from his partner to afford the $2,500 monthly stipend he pays in spousal and child support. According to his testimony, McGreevey now owes his partner more than $200,000.
The former governor proclaimed he was a ?gay American? and resigned from office in 2004 after saying he had an affair with a male staffer. The staffer denied the affair and said he was sexually harassed by the governor.
The trial will continue Thursday. Judge Karen Cassidy told the courtroom she is hoping for a speedy trial.
?The world cannot stop for the McGreeveys,? she said.
