Police in Maryland say a man fatally stabbed another customer outside of a Popeyes restaurant in a fight over the recently rereleased chicken sandwich.
The two men were waiting in line at an Oxon Hill Popeyes Monday night when one of the men accused the other of cutting in front of him in a line specifically for ordering chicken sandwiches, Prince George's County police spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan told news outlets.
According to police, the fight then spilled outside, where one of the men stabbed the other.
Police say the 28-year-old victim was from the Washington area. He was taken to a hospital, where he died less than an hour later.
Police are still looking for the suspect and have called on him to surrender, Donelan added.
"Those are our initial details, that somebody cut in front of the other,” says Donelan. “For you to get that angry over anything, for that type of anger, to develop into this type of violence, again, is a very sad and tragic day. And that person needs to turn themselves in. "
The victim and the suspect's identities haven't been released.
Popeyes resumed selling its chicken sandwich on Sunday. First released Aug. 12, the chain credited popular demand to its supply selling out by the end of that month. It's also been credited with causing long lines and hourslong waits across the county.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
