Marine Sgt. Wade Phillips accused of trying to lure children in Roselle
A United States Marine sergeant at an Armed Forces recruiting facility in Union County has been arrested in connection with luring incidents earlier this month.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the arrest of 27-year-old Wade Phillips.
Phillips is a recruiter with the Marines office on Jefferson Avenue in Elizabeth.
He is charged with second-degree sexual assault and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Phillips allegedly passed three children, a 10-year-old boy and two 11-year-old girls, near Seventh Street and Chestnut Avenue in Roselle in his government vehicle on Oct. 5. He then allegedly backed up, turned around and parked his car on the street.
Phillips is accused of then touching himself inappropriately while calling for the three children to get their attention.
The children immediately walked to their school and reported the incident.
Once Phillips was identified as a suspect in the case, Roselle detectives spotted and tracked his vehicle on Tuesday.
He was arrested without incident in Roselle and is being held on $125,000 bail.
Investigators say they are working to determine whether Phillips may also be responsible for at least five similar incidents that took place in Roselle and Roselle Park during the last six months.
Anyone with additional information about the alleged lurings is asked to contact Union County Prosecutor's Office Sgt. Timothy Durkin at 973-698-9529 or Roselle Police Department Detective Carmen Olivera at 908-245-9200.
