Students from Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, on a nationwide bus tour to promote gun reform, made a stop in Morristown Thursday.
The “March For Our Lives” event was held at Lidgerwood Park with many student activists from New Jersey who are also advocating for safer schools and changes to the country’s gun laws.
The tour is in response to the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.
"I'm not naive to the reality that when I go to school I know where to hide. I know what can happen,” says Lyndhurst senior Elena Perez.
Parkland student Kyrah Simon says that traveling the country this summer has been a moving experience.
“It's definitely opened my eyes to the fact that we let distance separate us. We think problems across the country aren't our problems, and there's people suffering all the way in Illinois, in Wisconsin, we're not hearing their stories,” she says.
The New Jersey students who attended the rally says that the Parkland shooting was a pivotal moment in their lives.
“When Parkland happened, even though I didn't know anyone personally there, it very deeply affected me because these are kids my age, doing what I do every day and are being killed just for going to school.,” says Chatham junior Evie Mason
Gov. Phil Murphy also attended Thursday’s rally.
Meanwhile, Florida prosecutors released new video of Parkland shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz’s alleged confession. Cruz is seen inside an interrogation room and can be heard saying that her hears voices and wants to die.
