Man hospitalized after falling 20 feet at Clifton’s ‘Gates of Hell’
A 21-year-old Port Reading man was rescued early Friday morning after falling roughly 20 feet in an area commonly referred to as the “Gates of Hell,” Clifton authorities said.
Clifton Police Department spokesman Detective Lt. Robert Bracken told News 12 New Jersey that officers responded to the rear of 895 Paulison Ave. around 12:10 a.m. on a report of an injured man.
Police found the man had fallen down a slope of rocks and landed near a storm drain, which was difficult to access, Bracken said.
With the assistance of the Clifton Fire Department, the man was eventually rescued and taken to University Hospital in Newark, police said. The man suffered traumatic injuries to his head and other parts of his body, Bracken said. His name and condition were not released.
“The Gates of Hell” became a popular explorer location thanks to the magazine “Weird New Jersey.”  The entrances leads to a system of tunnels which were built as a drainage run-off for a stream called Weasel Brook, according to the publication.
Bracken posted on the Clifton police Facebook page that the location is extremely dangerous and that curious New Jerseyans should stay away. “Trespassers will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
