An arson investigation is underway following a three-alarm fire in Englewood that killed a man.
The fire started just after 1:30 p.m. Monday at a two-story home on Shepard Street. Fire departments from four towns were called in to fight the blaze.
Fire Chief Gerald Marion says a man had to be rescued from the back of the home. He was in cardiac arrest at the time.
"We had some difficulty getting to the victim because of the amount and intensity of the heat," he says. "They made an incredible rescue. They breached the walls to recover the civilian victim."
The man was taken to Englewood hospital but did not survive. He has been identified as Charles Brown, 57.
One firefighter had to be treated for minor burns.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office is investigating how the fire started.
