Low voter turnout expected despite number of races
Every seat in the New Jersey legislature is up for grabs this Election Day, but voter turnout is expected to be low.
The last time every seat was in contention was in 2003, but only 34 percent of registered voters took part in that general election.
Pollsters say part of the problem is that there aren?t any major national or statewide races to accompany the local ones. However, at least one race is turning heads.
The fight for the 12th District senate seat is expected to be close. Incumbent Democrat Ellen Karcher faces Republican Jennifer Beck.
Voters will find a number of ballot questions when they enter the voting booth Tuesday. The first deals with allocating a half cent to property tax reform. The second, if passed, would allow the state to issue $450 million in bonds for grants to fund stem cell research projects.
Another question would provide $200 million in bonds for the preservation of recreation and farm land in New Jersey. The fourth question would remove the outdated words ?idiot? and ?insane? from the part of state constitution that discusses who is prohibited from voting in elections. The measure would replace the terms with ?a person who lacks the capacity to understand the act of voting.?
Polls open Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
