Low PARCC numbers could limit school aid
School districts with too many kids opting out of the state's PARCC test could lose state aid, according to Education Commissioner David Hespe.
Hespe was questioned Tuesday at the Senate's Budget Committee hearing.
"We're going to work with the school," Hespe says, "but ultimately for every failure to comply with our directives...there is a final consequence. And that final consequence is going to be losing state aid."
Hespe says before that happens, the state will work with districts to find out why parents are opting their children out of the test and see if there's a way to fix it.
Another concern addressed about the PARCC test is how much test results should weigh on teacher tenure evaluations. Commissioner Hespe said he was open to making sure standardized test results have a small impact on whether or not teachers earn tenure.
New Jersey will finish its first round of the PARCC test next month.
