A budget shortfall in Long Beach is leaving some commuters looking for a ride.
According to Long Beach city officials, weekend bus service has been suspended. And if the city’s finances don’t get turned around, night service will be suspended starting Thursday.
On Thursday, council members rejected a $2.1 million bond proposal. That could result in the city not being able to pay its bills or make payroll.
City Council President Anthony Eramo called public transportation “extremely important.”
“The city is working to restore full service as soon as possible. However, there is a short-term cash flow problem, and based on our proposed budget, we will be facing significant financial challenges going forward,” Eramo says.
City officials say they are also looking into possible layoffs to keep the city afloat.
