An assemblyman?s proposal to have the Army National Guard roam the streets of the Garden State is raising some eyebrows.
State Assemblyman Lou Manzo, of Jersey City, has a plan that would deploy the National Guard to combat violence in New Jersey. His proposal calls for soldiers to supplement police on city streets.
?Gangs are taking over our neighborhoods. Kids can?t play in the park. People can?t walk the streets,? Manzo said. ?If we use troops and have used troops to liberate other countries, why not use them to liberate us??
Many residents, along with the Jersey City mayor, feel Manzo?s proposal is a bad idea. Some said they live in New Jersey, not a Middle East country.
Manzo said he doesn?t believe his idea would create a police state, just a safe state. The bill calls for the governor to deploy National Guard troops at the request of local municipalities.
