Kinnelon officials appeal decision denying borough its own ZIP code
Officials in Kinnelon say that they are appealing a decision to deny the borough its own ZIP code.
The U.S. Postal Service said in March that the borough does not meet the criteria for a unique ZIP code. A location must have 25,000 points of delivery under the USPS rules. Kinnelon only has 3,500 points of delivery.
Kinnelon shares a ZIP code with neighboring borough Butler. The two boroughs also share some street names, and the Kinnelon mayor says it leads to some confusion and lost mail.
“We have just about nine streets with the same names, including Boonton Avenue and Lincoln Road,” says Mayor Robert Collins. “It’s presented some safety issues in the past. Delivery issues. And we have some homes that have not been receiving voter registration and voter information.”
Collins says that because Kinnelon is in the Highland Preservation area, the borough isn’t likely to grow enough to hit the 25,000 points of delivery mark.
The appeal decision is expected by June. If the appeal is denied, Kinnelon must wait 10 years before it can try again.
