Officials at Kean University say the school is taking "appropriate precautions" to ensure safety after receiving threats on Twitter.
The university said that specific violent threats were made anonymously on Twitter against Kean's black community as well as to the campus at large.
Authorities took immediate action and notified local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to the situation.
Police on Wednesday said campus remained open and classes continued as scheduled.
"We are profoundly troubled by this display of hatred which does not reflect in any way the values we hold sacred on our diverse campus," police said in a Facebook post. "We will continue to keep the campus community informed of any further developments in this case."
Police ask anyone to report suspicious activity on campus by calling 9-1-1 or the campus Department of Public Safety/Police at 908-737-4800.
A coalition of black ministers has called for the resignatoin of Kean University President Dawood Farahi in the wake of the threats.
