A Kansas community college announced that it is making some changes to its athletic program following the death of a football player from New Jersey.
Braeden Bradforth of Neptune died in August following football practice at Garden City Community College.
His family has been demanding information about the school's investigation following Bradforth’s death. Bradforth’s mother says that she was told her son was denied water during practice and that team officials waited too long to call first responders once her son was found collapsed outside his dorm.
An internal review released by the college Friday says that according to coaches Bradforth never dropped to a knee or complained during practice. Coaches say that after practice he did not attend a team meeting, but walked toward his dormitory. Bradforth was found about 20 minutes later outside his dorm, collapsed. About 20 minutes afterward, someone called 911.
Garden City college officials say that several changes have been made as a result of the internal review. Another athletic trainer and strength coach was hired and all coaches will get CPR and first aid training. There will also be welfare checks for players who leave practice early and protocols to identify heat-related illnesses.
The review was released one day after all 12 of New Jersey’s House of Representative members signed a letter demanding an independent investigation into Bradforth’s death.
An attorney for Bradforth’s family says that the college’s interim athletic director gathered the information used in the review of the football program. The family is considering a lawsuit against the school.
