Judge to rule on special prosecutor request in Christie Bridge-Gate complaint
A Bergen County judge says she'll rule by the end of the week on a request to appoint a special prosecutor to consider a citizen's complaint against Republican Gov. Chris Christie in the Bridge-Gate lane-closure scandal.
William Brennan alleged in a criminal complaint that Christie violated the state's official-misconduct statute by failing to reopen Fort Lee's access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in 2013. Brennan is a former Teaneck firefighter and attorney by training.
Superior Court Judge Bonnie Mizdol heard from attorneys Wednesday.
Two of Christie's former aides were convicted of conspiring to close the lanes in order to create traffic problems in Fort Lee. Prosecutors say this was done to get revenge on Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for refusing to endorse Christie's re-election campaign.
Brennan filed the complaint after several witnesses testified that Gov. Christie knew about the lane closures while they were happening. The governor has denied any knowledge of the plot and wasn't charged.
The governor is currently scheduled to appear in court on the complaint in January.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the judge would hear arguments about Brennan's complaint today.
