Jersey City officials have unveiled security upgrades in a park where a woman was killed while jogging five months ago.
There are now seven blue lights inside Jersey City’s Lincoln Park – a security measure dedicated to Carolina Cano.
“I think what happened was a very tragic, isolated incident,” says Hudson County Freeholder Bill O’Dea. “But you can always make a safe park safer."
Cano was jogging in the park on March 24. Police say she was attacked, assaulted and strangled. Despite an arrest, there were calls from the community for increased security. Less than five months later the blue light notification system was been installed.
“If they see something or feel in danger, they can activate this,” says O’Dea. “It directly connects to our CCTV unit and video, so we know who the person is.”
In addition to the blue light, O’Dea says that they have also expanded the civilian park patrol. The patrol guards the park from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week.
We basically ride around the park. Make sure there is no suspicious activity,” says park patroller Alejandro Marin.
The Hudson County Sheriff’s Department has also increased patrols in the park. More security cameras have also been added. There are now 55 park-wide. O’Dea says that about 98% of the park is covered by the cameras now.
O’Dea says that the blue lights were the idea of a Jersey City resident.
He also says that the playground will now have a monitor to protect the park’s youngest guests.
