Jersey City polling center sees hourslong wait time
Jersey City residents came out in droves to vote on Election Day, leading to long lines at the polls.
Although polls in New Jersey closed at 8 p.m., Jersey City residents were still voting at 9 p.m. at the firehouse on Marin Boulevard as long as voters were on line by the time the polls officially closed, they were still allowed to vote.
Voters say the Marin Boulevard polling location saw long wait times for the majority of Election Day. The average wait time was between 60 to 90 minutes. But some say that they waited nearly four hours when crowds were at their peak. The firehouse was where voters in Jersey City's 15th and 9th districts voted.
Some say the long wait was due to a lack of voting machines inside the firehouse. For most of the morning, there were only three machines inside. A fourth machine was brought in for the afternoon.
Some voters say that they did not mind the wait, but think that something needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.
"I think the issue is that we need to put more money into Election Day," says one voter. "I think the poll workers really feel bad about the lines."
Poll workers were also handing out water and granola bars to voters who were waiting.
