Jersey City high-rise goes up in flames
? Investigators are looking Tuesday for the cause of a high-rise fire in Jersey City.
Officials say the blaze at the 17-story building on Hudson Street was first reported around 9 p.m. Monday. Fire officials say the blaze was out of control at times and tough to contain. They say the fire was under control around 1 a.m.
Inspectors say the fire started on the top floor of the building, which is under construction. They say it is not considered suspicious. The building was deemed structurally safe by inspectors.
Nearby residents and businesses were evacuated due to the blaze, but some have been allowed to return. In addition, a number of streets were shut down. Officials say Washington to Hudson as well as Morris to York should be closed for at least another day.
The city has asked K. Hovnanian and Equity Residential, the owners of the building, to plan how it will clean up the damage safely.
