The performing arts may be struggling now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a New Jersey dance company is not letting the virus stop them from being creative.
The dancers with Nimbus Dance Works have released a series of videos showing the dancers dancing in unconventional places, such as in their kitchens.
The dance company is based out of Jersey City. It’s 14 dancers have been making the videos since the pandemic forced them to cancel live performances.
May was supposed to be a turning point for Nimbus – after 15 years, the company was finally opening its first dance theater.
“May 28 was supposed to be the grand opening of the Nimbus Arts Center at The Lively” says founding artistic director Samuel Pott.
Pott says that it is disappointing that the opening will have to be postponed, along with the classes and performances that were set to be held.
“We are thinking about the people that we serve. We are looking forward to getting back. We’re not going anywhere,” he says.
Nimbus is also offering $100,000-worth of dance scholarships beginning this summer for Jersey City children. It will also include virtual dance programs.
