An Essex County restaurant with a lot of Caribbean flair is offering a taste of Jamaica to those who love food with a lot of flavors.
The owner of Café Mobay in Bloomfield says that his food is a different experience. The restaurant specializes in spice and lots of flavor.
“Like the allspice, a little ginger, you know? Stuff like that, fresh thyme,” says owner Patrick Smith.
Smith says that the most popular dish at the restaurant is oxtail.
“It’s a three-step process where we marinate for at least three days,” says Smith.
The restaurant recently reopened for pickup, delivery and outdoor dining. Smith says that he made sure that the right protocols were in place to protect customers from COVID-19.
“We stopped the customers from coming all the way into the restaurant. Normally our pickup time would be like 15 minutes. We give them 35-40 minutes for pickup so there’s no three, four customers waiting inside the restaurant,” says Smith.
Customers must also wear masks. The restaurant is sanitized at least four times a day.

Some of Café Mobay’s biggest fans say they are happy it is reopened.
“It costs me $40 to come here in a cab,” says Marlene Hall, of Newark. “This is the first restaurant that I ever came that I like everything. And I’m a very picky person.”
Café Mobay is open seven days a week.
