ICE: Man accused of killing jogger was in US illegally, deported twice before
The man accused of killing a jogger in a Jersey City park was living in the United States illegally and has been deported twice before, according to officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Jorge Rios-Doblado is accused of killing 45-year-old Carolina Cano while she went for a jog in Jersey City’s Lincoln Park in the early morning hours of March 24. Her body was later found in a lake inside the park.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says that the investigation is active and ongoing. They are trying to retrace Cano’s steps that morning. Surveillance video shows Cano entering the park around 5:30 a.m.
Authorities are also trying to learn more about the suspect. ICE officials say that Rios-Doblado was deported from the U.S. in 2003 and 2004 from Laredo, Texas, due to immigration violations.
But neither the Hudson County prosecutor nor ICE officials have been able to provide any previous criminal records for Rios-Doblado.
Meanwhile, security has been increased inside Lincoln Park and there are plans to install more security cameras. Officials held a community meeting Tuesday to assure the public that they are doing everything they can to ensure safety.
Cano came to the U.S. from Peru and was working as a live-in nanny. On weekends she lived elsewhere in Jersey City with roommates. Her roommates previously told News 12 New Jersey that she would often go for Sunday morning runs in Lincoln Park before church.
Rios-Doblado was supposed to have a court appearance this week, but that appearance has been postponed until April 11.
