Hundreds of kids at an elementary school in Old Bridge Township received free bike helmets, thanks to the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department -- and now are learning the importance of safety.

It was all made possible thanks to the efforts of the principal of Memorial Elementary School.

He reached out to the sheriff's department, and they responded with 400 helmets -- one for every student in the school.

The goal is to get kids off the iPhone and the tablets and back outside to be a kid on summer vacation.

"I think it's good for kids to have friends their own age and friends in general and to be able to get out and get fresh air and sunshine because it's good for you,” says PTA President Kristin Walters. “It's good for your health and the way you your moods air just helps make you feel better."

The sheriff’s department will be raffling off some bicycles at the school Saturday morning.
