A northern New Jersey high school basketball player has broken a county record for points scored.
Michelle Sidor from Saddle River Day High School now has more than 2,600 points in her high school basketball career. She broke the Bergen County record last Saturday.
"It's all about her work ethic. Nobody knows how much this kid works,” says Coach Danny Brown.
Sidor was almost a full-time soccer player. But Brown says that he spotted her in fifth grade and thought her athleticism would translate well into basketball.
Sidor says that now basketball means everything to her.
“I don’t know what I’d do without it,” she says.
Sidor broke the record previously held by Anne Donovan, an icon in women’s basketball who went to Paramus Catholic.
"It's great and an honor having my name up with hers,” says Sidor.
Sidor, who is a senior, still has three more months in her season, including playoffs, to score more points. She will then attend the University of Michigan, where she says she hopes she breaks more records.
The all-time girls’ basketball scoring record in New Jersey is 3,899 points. It was set by Kristen Symogyi who set the mark 25 years ago at Saint Peter's High School in New Brunswick.
