House Democrats have introduced a bill to Congress that would require two years of debt-free college across the country.

The bill would also increase government investments in financial aid and cut down on college loan debt.

More than 20 states already have programs in place with similar goals. Some colleges and universities also have some debt-free programs.

“At Princeton, as a result of the generosity of our alumni, we’re able to offer every student the opportunity to attend with full grant aid, regardless of their need,” says Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber. “I am delighted to see Congress thinking about how to do that on a national level…It’s important to address these concerns that people have about the cost of higher education.”

Students in the United States owed more than $1.3 trillion in student loans in 2017.
