Homeowners fear frozen pipes as temperatures drop
When temperatures get dangerously cold, many people know how to keep their bodies protected. But what many may not know is the best ways to make sure homes are protected from the bitter cold as well.
Keith Ashley from Edison Heating and Cooling says that he is usually very busy during the winter months making sure the weather outside doesn't cause major problems indoors. He says that most of the calls he gets stem from a lack of maintenance in the home.
Metuchen resident Nanci Novia called Edison Heating and Cooling after her system went out and her home became too cold.
"I looked at the thermostat and the temperature was like 60 [degrees]," she says.
Novia says that she was most concerned about her water pipes freezing.
"It could have been bad," says Ashley. "She could have frozen pipes by Friday."
Ashley says that he has seen it all while making repairs inside people's homes
"I've seen it actually raining in people's houses because pipes froze," he says. "It's amazing. A lot of people, they buy a house and they don't understand how their systems work."
Ashley says that homeowners are recommended to run their water slightly when temperatures get below freezing to allow circulation and prevent the pipes from freezing.
Regular maintenance on water heaters and heating systems is also recommended.
Meteorologists say temperatures Thursday night into Friday are expected to get dangerously cold, with wind chills making temperatures feel even colder.
